If you have a smartphone, which should be almost everybody reading this, and you have not set a password or pin to protect the data stored on it, the folks from Lookout, a security outfit based in San Francisco, California USA, have published the steps that you may take to guard access to the data stored on your smartphone – if it falls into the wrong hands.

The suggested steps involved cover Android phones and the iPhone.

For Android, depending on your type of phone, you can select to use a pattern unlock, a personal identification number (PIN), or an alpha-numeric password.
