Dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04

Asked by: 889 views Dual-booting

I have install Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 as per your tutorial  http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2011/05/22/how-to-dual-boot-windows-7-and-ubuntu-11-04/; and I used the recommended EasyBCD2.1 booting method.
The windows 7 boot correctly  but when I use Ubuntu, I get the following  screen ;

GRB4DOS 0.4.5b 2001-04-23, Mem:639K/510M/0M, End:35149
[Minimal  BASH-like line editingis supported. …..]
grub>

The installation is done on a Compaq Evo N800w with a 300GB HD divide in half between Window and Ubuntu
Can you help
Thank you

    If you split the disk in half, that means the boot partition for Ubuntu 11.04 is near 150 GB from the start of the hard drive. That could be the problem because there is a limit to how far out the boot partition can be from the beginning of a disk.

    I have not established what that limit is, but I think 50 to 75 GB is a good bet (don’t hold me to that, it’s just a guess).

    Btw, something similar was discussed at http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2010/11/09/how-to-dual-boot-fedora-14-and-windows-7/comment-page-3/#comments

    Try this scheme, modified from the solution in the link above:

    Partition 1 – primary: 100 MB Windows boot
    Partition 2 – primary: 500 MB /boot – for Ubuntu
    Partition 3 – primary: ~150 GB Windows C: drive
    Partition 4 – extended: ~150 GB – create logical partitions for Ubuntu under this.

    This means that the boot partition for Ubuntu will have to be created (but unformatted) during the installation of Windows.

    If you try this and it works, keep us posted.
