Where to install Ubuntu 10.10 – IDE or SATA – and XP?

Asked by: 1055 views
Ubuntu

I have one Sata HD and one IDE where I plan to run XP and Ubuntu 10.10, one in each HD. In this scenario, where should Ubuntu be installed (after installing XP, I just learned this… unable to boot, redoing the box), on a Sata, on an IDE disk, or does it even matter?

Thank you.

I don’t think it matters whether you install it on SATA or IDE.

The critical decision is where you install the boot loaders. The best way to go is install XP on the first drive. XP will install its boot loader in the Master Boot Record (MBR) of the drive. After installation, reboot and make sure that you can use XP.

Then install Ubuntu on the second drive and install GRUB 2, Ubuntu’s boot loader, in the MBR of the second drive. When you reboot, you will find yourself back in XP. The trick now is to add an entry for Ubuntu in the boot menu of XP’s boot manager.

The easiest tool to do that is EasyBCD, which you may download from http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1. I have not used it on XP, but have used it many times on Windows 7. Sample steps of how to use it is available here.

Let us know if this works for you.

Note: If you do not want to deal with two boot loaders, you can just install GRUB in the MBR of the first drive, which is the default anyway.
