When setting up Full Disk Encryption, Does DMCrypt salt the encryption key like TrueCrypt does on Windows? I question the strength of the encryption if no salting is done.

Enjoyed your article about encryption Ubuntu 11.04: http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2011/05/10/how-to-install-ubuntu-11-04-on-an-encrypted-lvm-file-system/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+linuxbsdos+%28LinuxBSDos%29

I'm concerned that there was no reference to any salting being done to the encryption key.

    Here’s a recent article on encryption and salting. It is not specific to disk encryption, but should be helpful – hopefully. See https://blog.mozilla.com/webappsec/2011/05/10/sha-512-w-per-user-salts-is-not-enough/

    Don’t have the answer myself. It’s more involved than the average user would care about, but I’m still looking.

    @nickr:

    I do not know the answer. My guess is they do, or they use another mechanism that would make the encryption as secure as it can be. I know that does not help you very much, but that is the best I can do. I did some research, but could not dig up any useful info. If you do find something, please come back and share with us.

    Obviously, know one knows the answer. Why not just answer the question. It would take a couple seconds.

    nickr,

    Your questions sound more like quizzes than genuine questions. I think that’s why finid is ignoring them.
