Ubuntu 11.04 on external USB drive:- /boot not ready error

Asked by: 2972 views Ubuntu

Hi, I followed your guide for installing 11.04 on an ext usb drive. I used a small usb drive to install ubuntu on a 500GB drive set up exactly as you suggested on my samsung laptop.

If I try and cold boot, all I get is XP still, if I restart I get a partial boot up except I have to skip ‘S’ as /boot is not ready or not yet present.

If I try the HDD on my intended computer (A DELL), it never evens acknowledges the HDD other than a quick boot error on its way to XP!

If I run the usb stick and try and mount the 500GB drive, it again fails to mount with an input/output error.

Think all I need is a tweak somewhere, but no idea where. HELP?

The same thing happened with my installation of Linux Mint 11 on an SDHC card. /boot and Swap could not be mounted, so pressing “S” for both was the only way it could boot. Once it booted though it ran like any other.

Must have been tired when I wrote this! (the USB stick was the install source)

I have a USB HDD that I installed 11.04 on, except its not recognised by my DELL (XP) and only recognised by my Samsung if I restart from XP and press Skip ‘S’ at /boot not ready. Then it appears to work.

This is kinda confusing. Could you restate the question.

Where does the USB stick come in. XP, where is that? Samsung laptop? Dell computer?
