Fedora, Ubuntu

I’m considering installing Fedora 15 or Ubuntu 11.04 on a USB stick with persistent storage, but I just read this tutorial on how to install Ubuntu 11.04 on external hard drive Now, I’m not sure which way to go. USB stick or external HDD?

Is it possible to do a full disk encryption of either one?

Hello to all. Well, I have come upon an odd issue when installing Ubuntu 11.04 on a usb flash drive. Eventually, I planned to install Ubuntu on the flash drive and while it was on the world background and progress bar, it displayed an error saying that it didn’t have any more space which was odd. I formatted the 8GB flash drive before the installation and erased it again with the option when installing Ubuntu. Now I plugged it into a computer and it only showed 1.48GB of total size even though it’s a 8GB flash drive. I know this is an authentic SanDisk brand. Thus, I am not too Linux savy, but your feedback would greatly be appreciated.

If size is a factor, you might want to consider an SDHC card. Works just like a hard disk, but even more portable than a USB stick. I installed Linux Mint 11 on an 8 GB one. See this tutorial.

A USB stick with a persistent drive was cool before very small and very mobile external HDDs. The external HDD gives you all the features and functionalities of a hard drive in a very small package.

I have one that fits nicely in my short pocket running Fedora 15 with full disk encryption configured. That is far more secure and useful to me than an installation on a USB stick can offer.

So, the short answer is, use an external HDD. And yes, you can encrypt it.

See this tutorial. It was written for Ubuntu 11.04, but can be use to install any other distribution in an external HDD.
