Snowden on Dropbox: It’s hostile to privacy

Edward Snowden Tor

Dropbox is a very popular Cloud storage services, but is it good for the privacy-conscious?

According to Edward Snowden, it’s not.

In an interviewed published on GuardianNews, Snowden described Dropbox as “hostile to privacy.”

So what are the better alternatives. Snowden recommended Cloud storage services with zero-knowledge as a key feature.

SpiderOak is an example of such a service, and it’s one of four I wrote about in 4 host-proof or PRISM-proof Cloud storage services.

An excerpt from the Snowden interview:

Cloud companies need to pursue the zero knowledge system, he said, where they host and process content on behalf of customers without having access to it themselves.

“By depriving themselves of the ability to read the information, of the ability to sort of analyse and manipulate the information without the customers’ consent or authorisation, that’s the only way they can prove to the customers that they can be trusted with their information,” he said.

Do not forget Tahoe-LAFS, if you want secure storage, then this is what you need.

They dropped the price as well, 25 usd, unlimited storage.
