Tizen 2.0 Alpha code and SDK released

The source code and the SDK for Tizen 2.0 alpha has been released. Tizen is a Linux distribution for mobile platforms cobbled together with parts from the MeeGo project, Moblin and Maemo (all three are now defunct). Tizen’s development is overseen by the Tizen Association, a non-profit organization supported by power-house companies in the industry

This alpha release is intended for the attention of developers, so it is not something you can download and install like other Linux distributions. But this is an open source project, so if you thing you can contribute, jump right in. Interested developers will find with this release the “Tizen kernel, device drivers, middleware subsystems, and Web APIs…”

Improvements in this release include:

  • Enhanced Web framework that provides better HTML5/W3C API support and more Tizen Device APIs
  • Advanced IDE & SDK for Web application development
  • New Platform SDK that helps platform development based on OBS

Note that while a production-ready version of Tizen is yet to be release, the buzz in the industry several weeks ago is that Samsung Electronics will launch a Tizen-based Galaxy smartphone sometime next year. The code name for the said smartphone is i9300.
