Endian Firewall Community 2.5.1 released

Endian Firewall Community is a free edition of Endian Firewall, a security-focused Linux distribution developed by Endian S.r.l., a Linux solutions provider based in Bolzano Italy.

Endian Firewall Community is designed for small, non-profit organizations and SOHO (Small-/Home-Office) deployments. The latest version, Endian Firewall Community 2.5.1, released today, comes with several feature enhancements, including support for most modern UMTS/3G USB dongles, trusted timestamping using OpenTSA, and improvements to the policy-based and static routing modules.

Other new features are:

  • Performance improvements – The whole system startup procedure has been rewritten. Endian’s new jobsengine decreases the startup by 50 percent. Additionally major improvements have been made in memory usage. A fully configured system’s memory footprint has been reduced by more than 200 megabytes.
  • Configurable update intervals – The contentfilter blacklists are now updatable through the GUI like for any other service and updates do not rely on the release of new packages anymore. The interval can be chosen from hourly, daily, weekly and monthly.
  • Customizable Dashboard – The new dashboard is now fully customizable through the use of configurable widgets. The update interval for all widgets can be set individually now, widgets can be placed by drag and drop and it is possible to deactivate widgets completely.

  3. Traffic shaping a.k.a QoS just wont work in any version I have tired. Turning IDS (they call it IPS for some reason) chop performance greatly. Documentation is very poor. Wont use more than 4BG of ram, but there’s squid proxy inside, I would like to use like 16GB for cache.
Boot performance is irrelevant if you run it on reliable hardware – endian just wont crash! Really. It’s on linux and it’s solid.

There’s a lot of good, but a lot of bad also.. But for a free UTM i would give it 8/10. Good, free product.
