Best of Proposed Mageia Logo

The Mageia project is a fork of Mandriva Linux. It is a brand new project, announced on September 18, 2010. There is an ongoing discussion about different aspects of the project, and one of those discussion revolves around the project’s logo. There have been some very good and some not so good logos proposed by community members, and what is being presented in this article are some of the proposed logos.

I will begin by presenting one of the best and one of the worst, and follow with the rest.

This is one the best, but is it a bird or parts of a plant?

Is it a bird?

And this one is one of the worst. In my opinion, this has the slimmest chance of being chosen as the Mangeia logo.

This one has a magical feel to it.

A planet comes to mind when I look at this one.

Is it a planet?

A lunar event?

Lunar event?

This one feels bland

Just fonts

This is just a variation of the one above.

Variation of the above

  1. >both uber crap names

I guess you are a crap specialist.

The name Mageia byt itself is fantastic if you know what it means. And the fact that the name also ties in with the old imagery of Mandriva (which was a combination of the merger Mandrake/Connectiva which never work.) is a bonus.

As for the visual aspect of Mageia it will be done by Nuno Pinheiro, of KDE fame and one of the best in his field.
He added three images last week to the Mageia flickr feed and in the comment had linked to a few more. They werent only the logo but actually a whole banner and page outlook. The three images he had posted where variations of the same theme with different font colors.

Seriously, who better to do the Mageia visuals than the guy who is responsible for many icons and themes and other visual of KDE4.x?

Its like opening you own little restaurant and Thomas Keller says he wants to be your chef.

  2. I particularly like the “Magical” version, but I think there should be a gold Mandriva-like star either at the right end of the arch…or maybe at the top of the “burst.”

Second choice is the “lunar event” logo.

No matter which logo is chosen, I think the Mandriva star should be incorporated.

  3. Lunar one is nice and makes sense because of the Mandriva tie-in.

The one you think lookes best is nice if you have a woman’s boutique, NOT for a logo.
Too much, too fine detail which wont scale well and horrible font.

  5. I prefer the lunar one. Or if the red one is chosen, it should have another font.

  6. So you’re talking about a feminine hygiene product right? Why don’t they spend a few thousand on a real designer and pick a name and a logo that isn’t the gayest on the planet for a change. Mandriva to Mageia – both uber crap names – no wonder the company went belly up.

  7. I quite like the lunar one – if manages to visually acknowledge the distro’s Mandriva heritage without being too close.

  8. yeah the red one is def. the best
