Elisa Media Center

Elisa Media Center is an Open Source, cross-platform multimedia application “connecting the internet to your all-in-one media player”. Developed by Fluendo S.L. of Spain, Elisa is available for installation on the Linux operating system. An alpha version with limited functionality is also available for the Windows platform.

Update: Elisa Media Center has been renamed to Moovida. So if you see Elisa Media Center in your distros repo, know that that is outdated. Update to Moovida and enjoy the latest and greatest in a Free Software media center application.

Like most other multimedia applications, Elisa provides the following media playback and viewing functionalities:

  • Watch online and local movies
  • Listen to Internet radio stations and to your local music collection(s)
  • View pictures with animated slideshows
  • Automatic detection of peripheral devices like cameras and iPods
  • Automatically find media on other computers in the local network

You may read the full list of features and functionalities on the projects home page.

Elisa Media Center is modular in design, and there are a number of plugins already available for it – YouTube, flickr, Dailymotion, Picasa and Shoutcast plugins. Being Open Source, developers can write their own Elisa plugin to extend its functionalities. Some Linux distributions have Elisa binaries which you can install using your distros package manager (search for “elisa”), and Sabayon Linux comes pre-installed with Elisa Media Center.
