SUSE Enterprise Desktop is the enterprise Linux desktop from Novell, and features all the excellent applications and programs that we have come to love and expect in any Linux distro.
Origin - Home Page: USA - SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop
Desktop: Gnome (default), KDE, compliz
Comments: Of the three available enterprise Linux desktops, Novell’s SUSE is the only one with a downloadable trial version. Made it easier for us to take the distro for a spin, and here’s what we found: It is, aside from some application differences, essentially the same as openSUSE. One thing we could not miss is that the installer is very much slower than in openSUSE. LVM is supported, but not the default, and the default file system is reiserfs, rather than the ext3 in openSUSE.
Aside from those minor differences, the application packages are essentially the same. However, there are a few enterprise applications included that you’ll not find in openSUSE:
- Citrix ICA client
- Ericom PowerTerm Webconnect - used to securely (via SSL, SSH, SSH keys, and Kerberos) access Windows and legacy applications from Linux desktops
- CASA (Common Authentication Services Adapter) manager - cross-platform foundation for authentication and single-sign-on services for users of Novell’s Linux desktop and Windows
- a compatible Cisco VPN Client (vpnc)
Here’s a video demo from Novell.
